We have a worksheet that outlines the degree requirements for LAS Economics Students.

The worksheet is a tool to help you in your academic planning, it is not intended to communicate with certainty that you have met graduation requirements. You are responsible to see that all your graduation requirements are met. It is highly recommended that you see your Records Officer in 270 Lincoln Hall before your final semester to ensure you are meeting all degree requirements.

INDEPENDENT STUDY REQUEST FORM

You must fill out a request form for Independent Study Courses. These offerings are listed as:

Econ 199: Undergraduate Open Seminar and

Econ 399: Undergraduate Open Seminar

They are research oriented courses where undergraduates work in a one-on-one relationship with a faculty member on a research problem of joint interest. These courses are generally taken for between 1 and 3 hours of credit. The credit is a function of the project. We provide a link to this form below. You'll need to use Adobe's Acrobat Reader (available at all CCSO sites, or get a free version from Adobe) to view the file.

ECON 199 AND 399 DO NOT COUNT TOWARDS ECON HOURS FOR AN ECON DEGREE.

Some guidelines for independent study courses:

  • You may only enroll in an independent study course if you have the permission of the instructor. You need to work with the professor to come to a mutual agreement as to what will constitute acceptable work for the credit you receive.
  • No faculty member is under any obligation to do an independent study with you and it is always our recommendation that you do an independent study only with a faculty member that you have previously worked in a classroom setting.
  • You should expect to do approximately 30-45 hours of work for 1 credit hour. You should expect to do approximately 60-90 hours of work for 2 credit hours. You should expect to do approximately 90-135 hours of work for 3 credit hours.
  • You need to fill out the proper form (link above) and return it to 225 DKH.

GRADUATION WITH DISTINCTION OR HONORS, HONOR SOCIETIES

Graduation with departmental distinction requires a 3.25 GPA overall and a 3.5 GPA in economics courses (excluding 199 and 399). Interested students must also complete a research project (Econ 399 and must be at least 3 credit hours) under supervision of a faculty member in the Department of Economics and be recommended by that faculty member for graduation with distinction. The research requirement is usually met by arranging with a faculty member to take Economics 399 on an individual basis. Students who are recommended for distinction may earn high or highest distinction on the basis of their overall GPA.

Students with excellent academic records may earn Bronze Tablet or College Honors. Bronze Tablet requires an academic ranking among the top three percent of your senior class. Graduation with Honors requires meeting College requirements as to GPA or rank. In LAS, there is an additional requirement requiring a minimum number of hours in advanced or honors courses or earning departmental distinction (see LAS Student Handbook). Honors courses are those marked by an ampersand symbol (&) in the course schedule. Alternatively, a student may earn honors credit for a course by developing an Honors Credit Learning Agreement with a faculty member. The instructor has the discretion as to whether to accept the agreement, what it should entail, and whether it has been satisfactorily completed.

Omicron Delta Epsilon is the principal honor society in Economics. Its objectives are to recognize high scholarship and to stimulate student interest in economics. Eligibility for undergraduates requires 2.0 overall GPA and at least 12 credit hours in economics courses at 300-level or above with GPA of at least 3.2. Students interested in joining should contact Professor Emeritus Bill Williamson.

There are a number of other societies recognizing academic achievements. For students in LAS, the best known is Phi Beta Kappa. For further information, you should contact your college office.
